The PSA observes patient under the supervision and direction of a RN to protect patient's safety.

Provides monitoring and observation to protect patient's safety


Requests immediate attention from the patient care staff to secure patient's safety


Notify RN IMMEDIATELY if you observe any of the following:


Shortness of breath


Increased or decreasing breathing rate


Patient complaints of pain


New cough or an increase in coughing


Complaints of chills, nausea or vomiting


Increased thirst


Changes in skin color


New drainage from any body orifice


Urine-color, odor and amount - do not empty urinals or hats


Patient is displaying new aggression or violence


Patient is attempting to harm self or others


Call for help IMMEDIATELY if the patient:


Attempts harm to self or others


Displays unanticipated aggressive behavior


Displays any change in medical condition or mental status


Report chest pain immediately!!


Reinforce the need to stay in bed


May assist with meals.


Provide pillow, blankets, or beverages upon request (and if appropriate).


Engage the patient in diversion activities: conversation, read to patient, play games and provide companionship






Provides quality patient care based on individual treatment plan.

Safety precautions are consistently utilized when interacting with patients


Carries code green button on self at all times


For the care of the mental health patient:


Observes patient is free from objects of harm or ligature and is breathing, random checks will be performed at intervals <= 15 minute apart and documents on paper form


Monitors patient safety in close proximity (1:1) if deemed necessary by the provider and RN


Checks environmental safety checklist one time per shift




Actively participates in unit milieu and utilizes partnership skills to enhance collaboration.

Functions safely in crisis situation by calling overhead code green and vacating the area

Call the patient by their preferred name


Communicate with patient what care you will be providing


Talk at eye level when possible


Use a calm, reassuring voice with the patient

Distraction--TV, reminiscence, for example, current events, trivia, magazines, games, cards if available.


Do not discuss your personal information, argue or give advice


FOCUS ON THE PATIENT: do not read or watch TV when the patient is awake


If the patient is hard of hearing, speak clearly, face the patient, do not yell at the patient

Education

High school diploma or equivalent.



Qualification/Skills



+ Previous hospital experience preferred


+ Excellent customer service skills


+ Basic verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills


+ Ability to follow directions


+ Must be able to stand/sit for prolonged periods of time


+ Maintain a high degree of integrity and confidentiality with sensitive information


+ Must maintain self control, both verbal and physical under stressful situations


+ May be asked to assist with lifting or restroom break (under supervisor direction





Work Schedule

20 hour per week

Evening eight hour shifts during the week and eight hour shifts every other weekend.
