### Summary
GS-6 Pharmacy Technicians function in various areas of the pharmacy, eg, inpatient pharmacy, outpatient pharmacy, chemotherapy, various storage areas, offices and patient care areas, under the supervision of the technician supervisor, depending upon the area of administrative assignment of the incumbent or a registered pharmacist in the absence of a pharmacy supervisor. Pharmacy technicians provide various technical support services within the pharmacy department. This position involves providing services related to inpatients and/or ambulatory patients.

### Responsibilities
GS-6 Pharmacy Technicians typically carry out the full range of technical support functions described below. These include but are not limited to; processing and filling outpatient prescriptions for scheduled and non-scheduled federal legend drugs and medical devices, over-the-counter products and supply items; inpatient preparation and distribution of unit dose medications and ward stock items and intravenous admixtures including cytotoxic chemotherapy; stock management; operation, maintenance, re-stocking and troubleshooting of automated dispensing equipment; patient and customer relations; and preparation and maintenance of various logs, records and reports. The incumbent may be required to perform some or all of the functions; however the relative percentages of time spent performing each specific function varies with the area of administrative assignment.

### Qualifications
**Basic Requirements**:
* United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

* Certified by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS 6 and above.0
Grade Determinations:
GS-2: A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.
GS-3: Have completed one (1) year of post-high school coursework related to medicine (e.g. chemistry, biology, college mathematics, etc.), or successful completion of a one (1) year accredited pharmacy technician training program, or 6 months of general experience, that may have included experience in another medical field (licensed practical nurse, laboratory technology, etc.).
GS-4: Have successfully completed 2 years above high school with courses related to pharmacy or pharmacy technology, or 1 year of general experience that may have included experience in another medical field (licensed practical nurse, laboratory technology, etc). Successful completion of a course for medical technicians, hospital corpsmen, medical service specialists, or hospital training obtained in a training program conducted by the Armed Forces or the U.S. Maritime Service under close medical and professional supervision is creditable on a month-for month basis for general experience.
GS-5: Have successfully completed a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included at least 24 semester hours of courses related to pharmacy or pharmacy technology; successfully completed pertinent specialized training courses in pharmaceutical and pharmacy services while serving in the Armed Forces is creditable on a month-for-month basis up to the 1 year of experience required for the GS-5 level; or at least 1 year of experience at the next lower level that demonstrates the core competencies described at the GS-4 level.
GS-6: Have one year of experience at the next lower level (GS-5), and must full meet the KSAs at the next lower level. PTCB certification is required at this grade level.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-6. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-2 to GS-6.
**Physical Requirements:**Employees are typically expected to work forty hours per week. Principle duties require repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., preparing IV admixtures, use of a computer keyboard, etc.). May require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 50lbs.), including boxes, equipment, and IV solutions; stooping or kneeling (e.g., to pick up items from the floor, remove and replace items on lower shelves, and to file documents in lower file drawers, etc.); sitting, walking, or standing for long periods of time (Up to 8 hours). Normal ranges of hearing and vision are required to perform work and communicate effectively; must have the visual ability to distinguish between basic colors and shades of color. An ability to perform tasks requiring rapid mental and muscular coordination functions simultaneously is necessary. Must be physically capable of operating various types of equipment used for the job.
